The path to Net Zero: Event series

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) published its recommendation on the level of the Sixth Carbon Budget in December 2020. It sets the path to the UK’s Net Zero emissions target in 2050, and will become the first carbon budget to be set into law following that commitment. The CCC held a series of online events which looked at how the UK can get to Net Zero and the opportunities and challenges ahead. Below is the event presentations and associated slides.

The UK’s international contribution – the Sixth Carbon Budget and Net Zero

This online session marks the start of 2021 – the year of COP26. It explores the CCC’s advice on the Sixth Carbon Budget as a fair and ambitious contribution to tackling climate change, considering how and why the Sixth Carbon Budget and the UK’s 2050 Net Zero target represent genuine global ambition to keep warming to the 1.5⁰C – well below 2⁰C limit as set out in the Paris Agreement.

The Economics of Net Zero

This event considers the CCC’s advice on the Sixth Carbon Budget and explores potential implications for UK jobs and the wider economy. It includes presentations from the CCC’s Chief Economist, Mike Thompson and Hector Pollitt, Chief Economist at Cambridge Econometrics.

Cambridge Econometrics was commissioned by the Climate Change Committee as part of its work on the Sixth Budget to produce an in-depth report looking at the economic impact of the Net Zero transition. Read the Cambridge Econometrics report.

Financing Net Zero

The CCC’s Sixth Carbon Budget identified a need for a programme of low-carbon investment reaching £50 billion/year by 2030. This event considers the Climate Change Committee’s advice on how to finance the Net Zero transition as part of the Sixth Carbon Budget, informed by the CCC’s Expert Advisory Group on Finance. The group was commissioned by the CCC as part of its work on the Sixth Budget to assess the UK financial system’s ability to deliver the Net Zero target. Read its full report here.

Policies to meet Net Zero

The CCC’s Sixth Carbon Budget advice identified the need for a programme of cross-economy policy to drive the transition to Net Zero. This includes public engagement, technology support, international action and driving a just transition. This event considers the Climate Change Committee’s advice on policy as part of the Sixth Carbon Budget, informed by the Expert Advisory Group on Policy – a group of leading policy experts, commissioned by the CCC to look at how to deliver the Net Zero transition in practice.
